Some important architects in history and development of the modernist movement include Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto.

- The design should derive directly from its purpose
- simplicity and elimination of unnecessary detail
- visual expression of the structure
- The true nature and natural appearance of material should be seen. "Truth to material"
- use of industrially-produced material
